The use and abuse of alcohol and drugs in the workplace and in society as a whole have serious implications for employee job performance and productivity. According to the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, about 18.2 million Americans are regular users of marijuana and 5.8 million Americans use cocaine.l The National Institute on Drug Abuse indicates that controlled substance abuse may cost industry $100 billion annually in lost productivity caused by absenteeism, accidents and decreased productivity.2
