Mr. Stewart has been practising as a Barrister since 1970 and senior Counsel since 1982. He has also acted as an Arbitrator (and Mediator) and has arbitrated international and domestic arbitration for forty years. He has been called (as Barrister at Law) to the Bars of Ireland, 1970, Northern Ireland, 1976, England and Wales, 1982, and Australia, NSW, 1991, and is a member of the UAE, European lawyers’ Union. Mr. Stewart has also lectured at universities and law schools.

Mr. Stewart has acted as arbitrator, President or member of Arbitration Panels, or as Sole Arbitrator, internationally. He has arbitrated under various international Arbitration Institutions and Arbitration Rules, under different laws and in different jurisdictions, including the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London, ICC – International Court of Arbitration, Paris, CAS – TAS, Court of Arbitration for Sport, Lausanne, and ad hoc in international disputes. Mr. Stewart is a Panel Member at ICSID (International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes). He was the first Irish arbitrator in the CAS – TAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport, Lausanne, Switzerland). None of his arbitration awards, or judgments, have been set aside by a Court of Law or tribunal in any jurisdiction.
Mr. Stewart has been a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London, and a Chartered Arbitrator, for thirty years. He is an accredited mediator, recognised by the Bar Council of Ireland. He holds a Diploma in International Arbitration from Dublin Institute of Technology, 1991, and Diploma in International Arbitration Law from UCD, University College Dublin, 1998. Mr. Stewart has lectured in INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION, Law and Practice, to lawyers and arbitrators, in many countries including England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Italy, France, Czech Republic, Australia, USA, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
He was the organiser of the first ARBITRATION LAW Course, and sole lecturer, for Final Year Bar Students at the King’s Inns Law School, Dublin. He lectured in ARBITRATION LAW & PRACTICE in DIT, Dublin Institute of Technology, and UCD, University College Dublin from 1990 onwards, as well as in the Law Society of Ireland, Dublin, and King’s Inns Law School.
Mr. Stewart has been involved as member and director of different organisations to assist those less privileged in Ireland and Europe, including Romania, Chernobyl Children’s charity, free legal aid, deprived children and human rights in Ireland. He has acted pro bono, and set up free legal aid, small claims arbitration and alternative dispute resolution for Sport in Ireland. He is a member, pro bono, of a major hospital Ethics Committee.
Mr. Stewart is independent, including of government, is Chairperson of the Contracts Award Committee of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, and member of the board of the Charities Regulatory Authority. Both organisations are independent of Government and have given him greater experience and expertise in determining rights and obligations.
He has acted independently as an advocate (Barrister / Senior Counsel) and as Arbitrator (also Mediator) for his entire working career, and is in good standing, with an excellent record. He will always furnish declaration of no actual or potential conflicts of interest.
