Dr Peter Bekker draws upon his triple training in Civil law, Common law, and public international law, the legal systems on which international arbitral law and procedure are based, to resolve complex cross-border disputes as an arbitrator and an advocate. He combines with the practice of law as a New York attorney his position as a tenured part-time professor and Chair in International Law at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy within the University of Dundee (UK). A Dutch national and a U.S. Permanent Resident, he served on the staff of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the 1990s. He concentrates in international dispute resolution involving private and sovereign parties. He has served as counsel and advocate in cases before the ICJ, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, and arbitral tribunals charged with resolving commercial and investor-State disputes. He earned basic and doctoral law degrees from Leiden University in The Netherlands and a Master's degree from Harvard Law School. He is the author/editor of five books and over 100 articles. He is a Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and of other arbitrator rosters worldwide. He speaks four languages.
The arbitrator’s role is to determine the case efficiently, fairly, and for the right reasons, always being mindful of the enforceability of the final award.
