The popularity of arbitration as a method of resolving international commercial disputes can be attributed largely to various institutions around the world that have prompted the use of the system, helped push for arbitration laws, and developed effective arbitration procedures. The author discusses the role of arbitral institutions, describes the arbitration process, and offers insights on managing it. This article was presented to the Worldwide Forum on the Arbitration of Intellectual Property Disputes, sponsored by the World Intellectual Property Organization and the American Arbitration Association in Geneva March 3-4.
