There is growing support for the use of nonadversarial methods to reach workable settlement agreements in divorces. Two alternatives, mediation and arbitration, are discussed and compared to the adversarial model with respect to the degree of communication between divorcing parties, equalization of power, degree of commitment to an equitable settlement, and level of conflict in the settlement process.
