A supporter—or support person—is an individual who helps the party understand the process, clarifies the decisions the person needs to make, and carries out practical tasks that will enable the person to make the decisions as needed.

In some cases, their role may simply be emotional support. The party chooses one or more supporters they trust. In some instances, a party may have a supported decision-making agreement with a trusted individual, focused on particular kinds of assistance.

The mediator or disability services organization with whom the individual has a relationship may arrange for a supporter’s participation.
