One of the strongest and most courageous people I have encountered in many years of mediation was an immigrant to the United States from Africa.

She was a single mother working low-wage jobs while she pursued an education. Her baby had a birth trauma that impaired the child’s cognitive and physical abilities.

A mediation session was attended by all the doctors involved in the malpractice claim, risk managers, insurance representatives and all counsel.

The woman brought her daughter, now a toddler, to the start of the mediation session, introducing Ana to everyone. The girl was dressed up in a red outfit that reminded me of how my cousins and I had new clothes each Easter. The mother and the child were all smiles as each adult went over to say hello.
