Two great English enthusiasts for arbitration history, Derek Roebuck and Johnny Veeder, died in the spring of 2020. Derek was a legal historian and an author of a series of books on the subject. Johnny was one of the top English practicing barristers and arbitrators.

Derek’s last book, with Francis Boorman and Rhiannon Markless, “English Arbitration and Mediation in the Long Eighteenth Century,” lists Johnny as one of key project fundraisers. My pandemic walking companion, international arbitration practitioner Karyl Nairn, was another sponsor, and she persuaded me to read the book and write something about it.

This, in turn, brought me back to the writing of James Oldham, who I am pretty sure I heard lecture in Boston in 1990.
