1. INTRODUCTION 

John Fellas is a widely recognized global leader in the arbitration community, contributing to its development for nearly four decades through many roles: a much-in-demand independent arbitrator, an esteemed practitioner, an adjunct professor, an author of many publications, a frequent conference and key-note speaker, and an active member of organizations and governing bodies of arbitral institutions. Through these professional activities, John has influenced and impacted the development and integrity of international arbitration. John is also known for his interest in and commitment to human rights, international law, and supporting the rule of law.  

The international arbitration community bears the responsibility to ensure that arbitration fulfils its promise to users to provide fair, efficient and effective dispute resolution and in doing so, fulfils its potential to meaningfully contribute to the rule of law. By providing parties with a neutral forum to resolve commercial and investment disputes, arbitration plays an important role in securing the availability and integrity of commercial justice, which is a crucial component of achieving the rule of law. Through facilitating the rule of law, arbitration contributes to achieving the peaceful resolution of disputes, encouraging global trade, and promoting prosperity. John exemplifies a modern “merchant of peace,” carrying forth the belief that arbitration contributes to trade and investment system and fosters the economic growth of developed and developing countries alike.2
