The historic traditions of academia have worked against accepting the idea of having thirdparty outside neutrals act to settle certain university-related disputes. The situation is slowly changing, however. This review of binding arbitration as played out between a major faculty union and California's huge state university system suggests that such arbitration can be acceptable to both sides and interweaves well with tradition.
