The Arbitral Tribunal Holds First Organizational Meeting with the Parties

On 15 March 2014, representatives of the Kingdom of Denmark in respect of the Faroe Islands and the European Union convened at the Peace Palace in The Hague for a first organizational meeting with the Arbitral Tribunal constituted under Annex VII to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (“Convention”).

The arbitration was commenced by letter dated 16 August 2013 by the Kingdom of Denmark in respect of the Faroe Islands addressing to the European Union a Notification and Statement of Claim invoking Articles 287 and 288(1) of the Convention, and Article 1 of Annex VII to the Convention. The dispute concerns the interpretation and application of Article 63(1) of the Convention in relation to the shared stock of Atlanto-Scandian herring.

The Arbitral Tribunal is chaired by Judge Thomas A. Mensah (Ghana). The other members of the Arbitral Tribunal are Professor Gerhard Hafner (Austria), Professor Francisco Orrego Vicuña (Chile), Dr. M.C.W. Pinto (Sri Lanka) and Judge Rüdiger Wolfrum (Germany). The Permanent Court of Arbitration (“PCA”) acts as Registry in the arbitration by agreement of the Parties.
